Pushpamala N. studied sculpture at the highly regarded MS University, Baroda. In recent times she has achieved critical acclaim and interest for her photo-performance works in which she adopts ironic roles and popular culture personas as a vehicle by which to examine issues of gender, culture and history. Her work has been exhibited widely and included in several major international exhibitions: Century City (Tate Modern, London 2001), Edge of Desire (Asia Society, New York, 2005) and Indian Summer (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris 2005). She is the winner of numerous Indian national awards and fellowships.
In Toronto, Pushpamala will screen two recent film works, Paris Autumn and Rashtriy Kheer and Desiy Salad, and engage in a discussion with Brenda Longfellow.
