“[art] gives us our place in the world; it reminds us what we are and what we could be."
-- Neil MacGregor, former Director of the British Museum
SAVAC promotes the intrinsic value of the visual arts as a vehicle for exploring ideas and experiences. The contemporary visual arts provide an important forum for critically exploring the experiences of South Asians today; for examining a range of social, cultural and political issues; for discussing beliefs and values. The visual arts play an important role amongst South Asians in Canada who are negotiating a complex social and cultural context. By engaging a range of thought-provoking concerns, the visual arts connects people around issues in our community, providing an opportunity to recognise a diversity of thought and creative expression.
In recent years, SAVAC has played a significant role in raising the profile of South Asian artists in Canada. Recent exhibition partners include: the Royal Ontario Museum, the Justina Barnicke Gallery at the University of Toronto, the University of Toronto Art Centre, the Office of the Arts Mississauga, the Harbourfront Centre, the Images Festival, Gallery TPW, Centre A (Vancouver), Glenhyrst Gallery (Brantford, Ontario) amongst others.
SAVAC has recently also begun working with the Toronto District School Board in collaboration with Asian Heritage month, to provide culturally diverse curriculum content for use in Toronto classrooms.
Your support of SAVAC contributes towards improving the visibility of culturally diverse art practices in Canada. Your donation assists us in further developing opportunities for, and increasing the visibility of, South Asian artists in Canada.
